Comparing Top Toothpastes: A Dentist’s Honest Review
Whiter teeth in 3 days! Healthier gums overnight! Enamel repair! If you’ve ever stood in the toothpaste aisle or browsed social media and felt overwhelmed by all the promises, you’re not alone. We all want a toothpaste that’s affordable, effective, and safe. But with so many options (and so much hype), it can be hard to know which product actually works and which one might do more harm than good.
We talked to our very own Dr. Lior Berger to get the scoop on some of today’s trending toothpastes. Let’s find out what actually makes the best toothpaste for your smile!
A Word of Caution About Choosing Oral Care Products
Unlike prescription medications, many oral care products aren’t regulated very closely, especially the ones you can buy online. Some of the boldest claims come from trendy, untested formulas that may not be backed by any clinical evidence at all.
In the worst cases, some of these products can actually harm your teeth, gums, or even your overall health.
In general, we always recommend looking for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. When you see this seal on a tube of toothpaste it means the product has been tested and proven to be safe and effective for things like cavity prevention, sensitivity reduction, and teeth whitening. If a brand doesn’t have the seal or provide links to scientific research backing up their claims, proceed with caution.
Niacinamide Whitening Toothpaste: Does It Work?
Niacinamide has gained popularity in skincare for its anti-inflammatory properties. But does it belong in your toothpaste?
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which has led researchers to explore whether it may be effective in controlling bacteria that cause cavities and possibly improving gum disease.
While it’s being researched, there is currently no compelling evidence that niacinamide performs better than other types of toothpaste in terms of protecting oral health. Many of these toothpastes don’t contain fluoride or other proven anti-cavity ingredients, and may put your enamel at risk.
No Support for Whitening Claims
Companies also make very bold claims that niacinamide is the best whitening toothpaste, but there is no evidence that the active ingredients would have a significant whitening effect. Any whitening is likely the result of abrasives in the paste, which can damage the enamel and gums, and cause serious sensitivity with prolonged use.
As a prosthodontist, Dr. Bergen also cautions patients about using abrasives on dental work like crowns and veneers, which can be damaged by abrasive products.
May Cause Health Issues
It’s also important to understand that niacinamide may cause side effects in people with kidney issues, gallbladder disease, or who take medications like blood thinners. While it might sound gentle, niacinamide can also irritate tissues, which is a common complaint in people who use it in their skincare regimen. So using it in your mouth every day may not be as harmless as it seems.
SP-6 Probiotic Toothpaste for Healthier Gums
Probiotic toothpastes are designed to support a healthy balance of bacteria in your mouth. And yes, there is some clinical evidence that certain strains of probiotics can improve gum health.
But here’s the problem: it’s unclear whether those probiotics are still alive and active by the time they hit your toothbrush. Some probiotic formulas also leave out fluoride, which puts your enamel at risk over time.
Whitening Claims Fall Short
Like niacinamide, there is no indication that SP-6 toothpaste will whiten your teeth. Ingredients that break up stains and brighten the enamel would kill any beneficial bacteria in the formulation, so any stain reduction likely comes from abrasives which scrub stains off the teeth. As mentioned above, this can be very harsh and cause permanent damage to the enamel with prolonged use.
While probiotics may have promise, more research is needed to determine whether they’re actually effective in practice.
Boka Toothpaste: Hydroxyapatite for Teeth Strengthening
Boka is a new brand that includes nano-hydroxyapatite, a form of the same mineral found in your enamel. Early research shows that this ingredient can help strengthen teeth and prevent decay, and may be a viable alternative to fluoride.
But there’s a catch: Boka’s website doesn’t always link directly to any studies about their product to support their claims, so it’s hard to verify the strength of the evidence. Most research into hydroxyapatite has been laboratory-based so far, so it’s still unclear whether it’s actually effective in practice. We also don’t have solid data about concentrations, interactions with other ingredients, or how long it would need to stay on the teeth for anti-cavity effects.
There are also other fluoride-free options out there with more clinical evidence behind them. Xylitol is a great example. If you’re curious about Boka, it may be a safe fluoride-free option, but be sure to talk to Dr. Bergen or another of our trusted dentists in Arizona to be sure it meets your oral health needs!
What Is the Best Toothpaste?
Here’s the truth: you can keep your teeth and gums healthy even without toothpaste, as long as you’re brushing thoroughly. That’s because the most important part of brushing is the mechanical disruption of plaque, meaning scrubbing it away with your toothbrush and floss.
So What Does Toothpaste Actually Do?
Toothpaste helps freshen your breath, makes brushing feel more pleasant, and delivers helpful ingredients like fluoride to protect your enamel or reduce sensitivity. The best toothpaste is one that:
- Has the ADA seal of approval
- Is low in abrasiveness
- Tastes good enough that you’ll use it twice every day
- Includes ingredients like fluoride to strengthen your enamel
- Is proven by clinical research to improve issues like tooth sensitivity
Looking for a Whitening Toothpaste?
To be totally honest, they generally don’t work. They tend to be very abrasive, and don’t do much to remove stains or change the shade of your enamel. Plus, you use them every day for a long period of time, meaning small amounts of damage can build up, leading to serious enamel erosion or abrasion, and chronic sensitivity.
If you want a whiter smile without the risks, Dr. Bergen says that routine cleanings are the best way to control surface stains, and a short-term professional whitening treatment is your best bet for enamel brightening. It’s safer, more effective, and less likely to cause long-term sensitivity compared to over-the-counter products used daily.
