If you need oral surgery, it’s completely normal to feel nervous. Most of us want to do whatever we can to make sure our healing process goes as quickly and comfortably as possible. The good news is that our team can help that happen with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in Phoenix and Gilbert!
This quick, simple addition to your oral surgery procedure can help give you the smoothest possible healing process. Best of all, PRP is a completely natural way to boost your body’s own powerful healing properties. Let’s take a look at how we use PRP in dentistry to give your smile the best possible care.
What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma is a powerful healing compound made from your own blood. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood that doesn’t include white or red blood cells. It’s made up of mostly (about 90%) water, along with proteins, nutrients like glucose and amino acids, and electrolytes.
Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are small cell fragments that form clots to help keep bleeding under control and start wound healing. They do this by sticking together, stimulating blood vessels to shrink, and triggering a chain reaction that releases powerful healing compounds. Platelets form a “plug” that allows proteins called fibrin to build up and create a sort of mesh that attracts other healing elements to the site.
Normally, platelets make up a very small portion of your blood. PRP has up to ten times the platelets as normal blood, making it a powerful way to start your healing process after oral surgery.
How Do We Use PRP in Dentistry?
While PRP may be more well-known for its use in skincare and other medical treatments, it has many uses in dentistry as well. We frequently recommend PRP to help your gums and bone heal more effectively after surgical procedures.
For example, we can add PRP to bone graft material to help it integrate with your jawbone. We can also add PRP after a tooth extraction to help prevent dry socket by forming a stronger clot. It’s especially effective at helping soft tissue heal faster, which can help to reduce your infection risks and boost tissue regeneration after gum surgery.
What Are the Benefits of PRP Dental Treatments?
- Speeds up your healing process
- Makes recovery more comfortable
- Promotes growth of health tissue
- Reduces risk of infection
- Helps prevent dry socket after tooth extractions
- Completely natural therapy that uses your own blood
- Improves outcomes for procedures like bone grafts
What Is the PRP Treatment Process?
PRP is a simple addition to nearly any oral surgery procedure. The process is simple and straightforward, especially if IV sedation is part of your treatment plan.
PRP start with a small blood sample, similar to a routine blood test, drawn right here in the comfort of our Gilbert or Phoenix dental office. We’ll put your blood sample in a machine called a centrifuge, which spins the vial very quickly. Spinning the sample pulls heavier materials like red blood cells to the bottom of the sample, leaving plasma at the top. Between these two layers, there will be a thin layer of platelet-rich plasma, which we’ll withdraw with a syringe.
We can then apply the platelet-rich plasma to the area where it is needed. This may mean directly applying the PRP as a gel to the surgery site or mixing it with bone graft material before placing your graft.
The entire process is quick and will not significantly change your surgical process. Our experienced team is here to answer any questions and help you feel completely comfortable throughout every step of your care.
