Keeping up with your oral health is important. But our team at Dental Specialty Associates of Arizona understands that dental care can sometimes feel expensive. We’re proud to be a trusted and affordable dentist in Phoenix and Gilbert, and helping you understand your financing options is a key part of how we do that.

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may know that you can use it for many routine dental procedures like cleanings and checkups. However, you may be surprised to learn just how flexible your HSA can be! Here are five common dental treatments you may not realize your HSA covers.

1. Can You Use an HSA for Dental Implants?

Yes! You can use your HSA to pay for dental implants when they’re needed to restore your oral health.

Dental implants replace missing teeth with artificial roots made of titanium and a natural-looking crown, bridge, or full-arch prosthesis on top. This is a fantastic way to restore your confidence by rebuilding a beautiful and complete smile.

However, dental implants are much more than a cosmetic treatment! Because missing teeth can lead to bone loss and other oral health issues, the procedure is considered medically necessary in almost all cases, meaning they are eligible for coverage by an HSA.

2. Will an HSA Cover Wisdom Tooth Extractions?

Yes! Wisdom tooth extractions are another dental procedure that’s usually HSA-eligible.

Whether your wisdom teeth are impacted, causing pain, or crowding your other teeth, removing wisdom teeth is often necessary to protect your overall oral health. The cost of the extraction, anesthesia, and related aftercare items (like prescribed pain medication) can all typically be paid for using HSA funds.

At Dental Specialty Associates of Arizona, we’re proud to provide affordable wisdom tooth extractions in Phoenix and Gilbert with our team’s trusted oral surgeon, Dr. Brian Lilien, overseeing each safe and gentle procedure.

3. Is Sedation Dentistry Covered by an HSA?

In many cases, yes. Sedation dentistry may be covered when it’s considered necessary for a safe and efficient non-elective procedure.

Sedation can make dental visits easier if you have high anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or if you need longer or more complex procedures. If your dentist recommends sedation as part of your treatment plan, it’s usually considered a necessary part of your care.

Common HSA-eligible sedation methods include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. However, cosmetic or elective procedures performed under sedation usually do not qualify.

To make sure you’re using your funds correctly, check with your HSA provider or ask our team for an itemized estimate that separates eligible from non-eligible charges. We’re always happy to help you navigate your benefits if we can!

4. Can You Use an HSA for Orthodontics?

Yes! Many orthodontic treatments, such as braces or clear aligners, are generally covered by an HSA as long as they’re for health-related reasons.

Orthodontic care helps to correct bite problems, crowding, misalignments, and other issues that can affect your ability to chew comfortably, speak clearly, and clean your teeth properly. These problems can also lead to long-term dental and jaw joint issues, so orthodontic care is frequently considered medically necessary.

Purely cosmetic orthodontics that are done only to improve the look of your smile without a functional reason may not qualify, but most orthodontic treatment plans take your bite health into account. If you or your child need a referral to an orthodontic specialist in Arizona, we’ll help you find the care you need as affordably as possible!

5. Does an HSA Cover Oral Surgery?

Yes. Oral surgery is typically an HSA-eligible expense.

This category covers a wide range of treatments including tooth extractions, bone grafts, sinus lifts, and corrective jaw procedures. Because these surgeries address medical and functional needs, they usually meet the criteria for qualified medical expenses under most HSA plans.

If your dentist or oral surgeon in Arizona prescribes medications or special post-surgery supplies like ice packs or medicated rinses, those may also be eligible for HSA reimbursement. Just be sure to keep all documentation and receipts in case you need to verify your expenses later.

How Can You Get the Most Out of Your HSA?

Understanding how to use your HSA for dental care can help you make the most of every dollar. Here are a few helpful tips to get the most out of your HSA!

You can use your HSA for family members.

If you have a family HSA, you can use it for your spouse and dependents. For people with multiple children or a spouse with complex oral health needs, this can be incredibly helpful in making quality dental care affordable. Especially if you have teens who need braces or wisdom tooth extractions!

Some dental supplies qualify for HSA reimbursement.

As mentioned above, certain supplies associated with specific dental treatments may be covered by your HSA. However, you can frequently use your account for everyday dental care products as well! This can include prescription toothpaste, gadgets like electric toothbrushes or water flossers if recommended or sold by your dentist, custom sports guards or night guards, and fluoride treatments to prevent cavities.

You can get more out of your HSA by planning ahead for major treatments.

If you know you’ll need a larger or more expensive procedure like dental implants or braces, plan your HSA contributions early in the year. For 2025, HSA contribution limits are $4,300 for individuals and $8,550 for families. These funds can roll over from year to year, so your savings continue to grow tax-free.

We’re happy to provide itemized receipts.

To ensure a smooth reimbursement process, our team is happy to provide a detailed breakdown of your treatment costs. In many cases, we may be able to label which parts of your care qualify for HSA coverage.

Don’t forget about preventive care!

Regular cleanings, exams, and X-rays are all HSA-eligible expenses, and staying on top of preventive visits can help you avoid bigger, costlier dental problems in the future.
